Gesu School’s History
Gesu Catholic Parish & School were founded in 1920 to minister to people in the newer western parts of the City of Toledo.
Upon its founding, the parish and school initially had Mass and classes at the Visitation Monastery located down Parkside Blvd. The first church/school (the current main school building) was completed in 1921.
Originally administered by the Sisters of Notre Dame, throughout the 20th century Gesu experienced continual growth due to its location in a booming part of town. As part of this growth, the church and school were continually being added on to or built anew. For example, the current school gym served as Gesu’s church space from 1938 - 1957, and additions to the school expanded the footprint well beyond the initial building.
As the 21st Century began, many changes happened in and around the Toledo area, but Gesu Catholic School has remained a beacon of hope and a center of learning for all of the students who attend. Gesu’s large alumni base is a source of great pride for many who attended over the years. And, as we move forward into the future, we do so filled with hope that the God who has brought us to this point will continue to guide us ever further into good things.
